We demonstrate and explain the procedure for air-layering a Japanese Maple. We cover everything from planning to preserve the upper portion as a shohin bonsai, to bark stripping by girdling, application of rooting hormone, pot placement, filling the pot with soil, securing, and watering management. We also introduce approaches to diagonal cuts that consider root spread and the concept of double-trunk training.
